Year 6 O.I.S. Trip

November 17, 2011 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Last Thursday, the Year 6 students of Fenwick went on a visit to Oamaru Intermediate School(O.I.S.) where most of them will be going next year. They went for the morning to learn a bit about the school and meet some of the pupils already there.

There was a tour of the school and a speech given by a member of the O.I.S. staff.

The children were then split into groups and sent to different classes to do different activities such as woodwork, cookery and sewing. There they made impressive pin cushions, yummy things to eat and many more marvellous things.

It was a fun morning for everyone and a pleasant introduction to the childrens’  future school.

Last Thursday our Kapahaka group performed at the annual Kaupapa Maori festival, at St Kevins collage auditorium. Each year the quality of performance  gets better and the numbers larger. Mrs Bell and Charlie Mareta-Ria had prepared our group well and they looked smart in their special t-shirt.    Ka pai Kapahaka.

And here is Scott Kitto and he is going to tell you how much fun it was.

Did you have alot of fun ?

I had a lot of fun watching the performances and performing as well.

What was your favourite part about performing?

when I got to perform the haka with all the other boys.

Was there a stiff competition?

yes there was when the Waitaki Boys haka group came up to perform it was scary, because they were very loud.

What was the scariest bit?

when I had to go up and give the leaders a hongi[a nose kiss].

Is there anything else you would like to say?

the performances were really incredible and watching the people perform showed me something to look up to.

Sustainable Transport

November 17, 2011 by · No Comments · Current Events, School wide news

Lately, room9 have been building sustainable transport.

First we got put into groups, received a brief and then we had to develop a team name, jingle and logo.

Plasticine was the first thing used to make a proper concept model.  Then the original models were made out of cans, sticks, bottles and more .  Most things were spray painted silver or painted black . Many models were not functoinal as their wheels were glued on to the body.  All of the logo’s were laminated and stuck to the walls. All of the models had seats made from fabric or ice —block sticks.

All vehicles are a work in progress and tomorrow will be the last day to finish them.

Can’t wait to see the result.

Waitaki Boys Choir

November 17, 2011 by · No Comments · School wide news

On the 7th of September the Waitaki Boys High School Choir came to Fenwick School. The choir included 8O male students. (NO GIRLS!) It also included two brilliant teachers that taught the boys well. I could tell the boys were singing their hearts out and they truly impressed the Fenwick studants. I’m sure those spesial singers inspired younger boys to sing like they did. It really was a magical sight for all ages to enjoy. Infact there were really tallanted people (not that the others were not)that had an individual song or thing no-one else could do.

My favourite part was seeing a student playing a classical but complex piano piece. All I can say is it was amazing and anyone would enjoy such a performance!

School Cross Country

November 17, 2011 by · No Comments · School wide news, Sports

Cross Country was so exciting.  Fenwick was  so fired up, everybody was yelling and screaming their heads off as well as running very fast. The wind was flying through their hair.
We were based at Awamoa park, competing in our diferent age groups.

We always compete for house points.  Eventually we found out the fastest runner in each age group, they were: for the eleven year old boys Jacob, for the eleven year old girls Laura, for the ten year old boys Izaac ,for the ten year old girls Brianna  for the 9 year old boys Tas  for the 9 year old girls Rachel  for the 8 year old boys Sam  for the 8 year old girls Nelly. These fantastic runners were selected to go to the North Otago Cross Country and compete against students from all other schools in the area.

Current Events Quiz

October 6, 2011 by · No Comments · School wide news

Yesterday, three pupils from Fenwick School went to Timaru to compete in the Central South Island Current Events. Quiz. Scott, Caleb and Bronwen left just before 3:00 as the quiz began at 4:30. Following their depature was a noisy, giggly, excitable car ride to Timaru Boys’ High School (the building in which the quiz took place). After finding their table, the clever Quiz Team settled into a nervous wait.

The first round in the quiz (the “World News Section”) came and went without a single incorrect answer, putting Fenwick’s team in a temporary joint first place along with several other teams. Such an early lead on other teams was excellent for the team’s confidence, which continued to grow during the next few rounds. By Round 5, the team had fallen to 3rd place, but considering there were 24 teams, this was an extraordinary position.

Before long, certain roles had been established within the team (Scott wrote down the agreed-upon answers, for example). In adition, the team discovered that each of them had an area in which they were more knowledgeable than the others. Scott was best at anything to do with sport – which was useful as many of the quiz questions were about the Rugby World Cup – Caleb was good at the questions concerning New Zealand and Bronwen was knew a lot about what was going on around the world.

Everything was going well – or so it seemed. The Fenwick team flew through the “Flag Recognition Round”, knowing all the countries the flags belonged to – including India, which confused many of the other Quiz Teams. The “World Mapping Round” also went well… and by Round 8 (“Who Am I?”) Bronwen, Caleb and Scott were still in third place.

When the Final Round (“Know New Zealand”) was over, Fenwick’s Quiz Team were restless with apprehension as the scores were counted and the winners determined.

‘In first place…Ashburton Borough 2!’  This was expected. Ashburton Borough were last year’s champions aswell. Now was the moment Fenwick’s team had been waiting for.  They listened for their name but it didn’t come.

Afterwards the team felt proud of their fourth placing but couldn’t help feeling disappointed as they had been in third place for so much of the quiz and only lost by one point.

Better luck next year Fenwick!

Treasure Hunt

October 6, 2011 by · No Comments · Current Events, Other Opportunities, School wide news

At Sparx we have been learning about hidden treasures.  When you first think of treasure you think of gold, money, money and money!

But we thought deeper.

We thought of things like nature, friendship, life, family and  memories of long ago.  To teach about what treasures really are we decided to create a treasure of our own in the form of a treasure hunt.

First we wrote out some clues to follow, next we printed them and set them out.  We then invited a group to follow our clues that lead to the treasure.

Most of us chose treasures that were invisible to the eye but felt by our heart.

Some of us still have our treasure hunts to complete but children that participated in them found them challenging and fun.

Fenwick Challenge #6!!!

October 6, 2011 by · No Comments · Puzzles and Challenges

If you  think of a 3 meter high wall dropping down to a hard gravel floor it doesn’t seem too bad does it?

Now imagine that you have to drop an egg down from the wall protected by only paper, gladwrap and tape!

Tricky huh?

Well, here at fenwick school we are taking this challenge head on and making the impossible possible.

In other words we are going to drop an egg protected by only paper and tape off a 3 metre high wall and onto the ground.

This was sucessfully done by Kiara and nathan, Rebeca and Julia as well as Mathew and Jorgie.
